Question:
I am thinking about buying a new Dufour 38 - one of the reasons for some
hesitation on my part is that the boat is fitted with a "new generation"
(to paraphrase the salesman) Volvo sail drive. I hear that the older
sail drive are to be avoided but what about the new ones? Can any of my
esteemed readers help this humble fellow?
Answer:
I strongly urge you to take a look at volvo's marine history with
recreational engines and the cost of maintenance and failures. Find out
what the required maintenance is and what it costs. Check both the
power boat and sail boat history.
Under no circumstance would I ever buy a prototype engine for a boat or
a car. Did that once. Parts were generally unavailable, downtime
frequent. Warranties are useless if you're in the islands and have to be
towed for repairs. (of course you may be able to sail to the dock)
I'd go for a 4-71 Detroit before I'd spring for a first year model.
