Who makes a good sail boat ?

Question:
I know this question will get more or is likely to get some debate going.

What I want to know is how do you tell A good boat maker from a bad one? If you look at all the adds they all say we are the best etc. I further would like to know is the increase cost for boat from one maker, is it really that much better then a boat at lesser cost then from another manufacturer.

For a starting point of comparison.

I had an experience with two car makers. One Mersades (sp) and the other chrysler. Both cars were brand new. The chrysler drove better had more power and was larger etc then the mersades. The mersades cost more then twice as much.

So in choosing a boat builder: who does make a better boat etc. The builders I'm looking at are Catamaran builders and the boat will be for long term live a board. The goal is for around the world crusing.

Those boats at this point under consideration are Privledge, Fountaine-Pajot and Jeannu.

Further question does it matter what teh material teh boat is build out of ? ie is steel better then aluminium better then fiberglass or carbon fiber. Or any other combination of comparisons

Answer:
There is only one thing you must remember when shopping for a quality sailing vessel - you get what you pay for.

Buy an inexpensive boat and you get real junk. (MacGregor, Hunter, Pearson, Catalina, Irwin, Bayliner, Chrysler, American Marine, Beneteau, etc.)

Buy a moderately priced boat and you get moderate junk. (Island Packet, Cape Dory, JBoats, C & C, Express, Kirie, S2, etc.)

Buy an expensive boat and you get quality. (Hinckley, Swan, Pacific Seacraft, Concordia, Contest, Coronado, Westerly, etc.)
