How to buy a bass boat?

Question:
I'm soliciting quotes from various dealers on 17' class fiberglass bass boats and the quotes I'm getting back are higher than I expected. However, I suspect the quotes I'm getting are MSRP before discounting even though the dealers are saying they are heavily discounted. Before I start talking turkey, I would like to know what to consider a "good and fair deal". Note that I do NOT consider MSRP a "good and fair deal".

I've seen a lot of folks talking about "perceived value", service quality, etc. on thiswebsite, and of course they are valid considerations. However, what is a typical markup on a new (1998) 17' fiberglass bass boat with dual console, 115hp oil injected engine, good recirculating livewell and timer, surge brakes on trailer, trolling motor with >=43 lb thrust? Can I safely assume 5-10 percent of MSRP for this class boat is markup, therefore subject to negotioation? Is it like dealing on a car where you make an offer based on the actual value + floor plan + a fair profit?

Answer:
The Javelin 369 w/115 johnson or evinrude with trailer lists for $17000.

The Procraft 170 DC with trailer and 115 mercury or mariner lists for $18800 but that includes full MSRP on the motor which is discounted in the package price of the Javelin.

Expect the dealer to move 10% off suggested list without much battle but beyond that you are getting into what the dealer needs to earn a profit and offer service after the sale.
