Question:
I have a small pontoon boat (7' X 11') that I am restoring. I want
to put an electric motor on it that I can control from a console with a
helm. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Answer:
-Look here :http://www.glen-l.com/ On the left side of the web page
click, "Boat Design Catalog", then click, "SP2 Special purpose", scroll
down and you will find drawings and description of an electric drive
setup using the lower half of an outboard motor (cheaply obtainable from
any outboard salvage yard from motors that have blown powerhead) and a
used golf cart motor, coupled via pulley and V belts...pretty ingenious.
Also, look at electric outboards intended for bass fishing
boats.....some of those are remote operated, although those models are
usually in the higher thrust ratings and accordingly pricey.
-Follow up to my previpous post: Although the Glen L setup shown on their
website seems suited for larger boats than your 7' x 11' pontoon boat,
the basic idea could be scaled down...just use bottom end from a smaller
outboard (2-3hp) coupled to a smaller electric motor such as used in
"toy" electric kiddie cars, the type small kids can ride in. I see those
frequently at garage sales for $5.00, usually busted up but the motors
are probably salvageable. However, in my honest opinion, unless you like
to tinker, your simplest solution will be to use an elec fishing
outboard mounted so the controls fall readily to hand at your seating
position...not necessary to mount on the "transom" for the speeds you
intend.
