Question:
How can I determine the max recommended horsepower for my 1986 29'
Riviera Cruiser pontoon boat?
The tag on the helm stand is unreadable, and the company is out of
business.
I need a new motor, and I'd like to get one near max HP.
Answer:
If memory serves me right, I believe that boat was rated for 135 hp max.
A lot of smaller boats are rated for this now but you have to remember that
back then the pontoons were smaller in diameter and the transom was not
built for high hp.
Go w/ a 120 to 135 and you should not have a problem. However, please check
your transom carefully for any cracks or problems. Is yours the transom
that is bolted on to the boat w/ 4 small bolts. If so, I recommend you have
it welded up before you install the motor to add strenght.
