Question:
I have a performance problem with our NEW 2003 Bass Tracker, Procrappie
17.5, with a 40 hp Mercury. I are VERY displeased with it's performance.
It has a 13P prop, maximum rpm is 5400 and top speed is ONLY 22 mph. The
boat has only one person in it, not loaded with extras and I trim it out
level to obtain maximum speed.
It came with a 14P prop and the dealership exchange it with a 13P prop and
said it should easily run 32-35 miles per hour. This is a joke. It won't
even run fast enough to get on top of small waves. It will only level out
when the water is calm.
What is the problem with this boat and motor? I've only had it a few months
but I'm already ready to sell it.
What can the dealership do to get his boat running properly. ALL of the
publicity material says that the 40 hp Mercury should push this boat between
29 and 32 mph (NOT 20-22)! It takes forever to cross our small lake and
rough water is an absolute nightmare.
My friend has a G3 boat, 40 hp Yamaha, 17.5 ft. and it zips down the lake
between 35-37 mph. Why is my boat so slow?
Slow speed and poor performance is not acceptable. Can my boat perform
better?
Answer:
- Something does not add up.
First, I will assume this is the 3 cylinder engine as the 2 cylinder is
rated to 5000 rpms max.
If it is the 2 cylinder, take it back to the dealer as the prop is too
small.
Now, the 3 cylinder has a gear of 1.83:1 which equates to 32 mph based on
your numbers.
Is the prop damaged?
Either the prop is not a 13 or the tach is wrong or the speedo is wrong.
Have you checked it w/ a gps?
- GT, I've ridden in that same setup (model year 2000), and it does about 30mph.
