Question:
Buying fishing boat for pond - need advice?
I want to buy a fishing boat for myself. Nothing to fancy probably 16'
or under with a couple seats or so. I not a die hard fisherman or anything
but when I go I like to be out in the water.
Could some of you guys help me make some decisions: What are the top
brands, brands to avoid, best motors, what horse is good enough - too much
etc...
Answer:
- Examine what your fishing area holds, what type of water, size, and the type
of fish you want to go after. There's no point in buying a V-bottom for
fishing small ponds, for instance. A jon-boat is the most utilitarian and
adaptable of boats, and they come in assorted styles and sizes from
plain-jane rowers to fully-equipped bass rigs.
If I were you I would try to get acquainted with some local fishermen by
going to a bait shop or department store and just "hang around." Ask
questions. Maybe there's a local fishing club (the bait shop owner would
know) that suits your style, i.e., panfish or bass, etc. Ask some of the
boat owners about the fine points of their particular rigs. Every boat
owner thinks he has the greatest and would be more than willing to give you
the particulars. The manufacturer's plate will give load capacity and
recommended power.
If nothing else, go to one of the fishing areas and do the same. Just
observe, ask questions. You'll be able to make
a qualified decision on what boat to buy if you do so locally.
- I have a 14ft flatbottom jon boat witha 2 1/2 horse power mercury on it and i
can go anywhere i want to but not as fast as the big bass boats do. When i go
fishing i catch just as many as the big boats or sometimes even more. The size
of the boat does not matter it is how you fish and what you fish with that
matters.
