Question:
Used fishing equipment?
I am in the process of buying my first sea going boat, a 27 ft sportfish on
a limited budget and was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on
where to find good used fishing gear on the net. I have tried eBay, but have
found that a lot of the stuff goes for close to retail. I am looking to buy
about 6 rod and reels of varying sizes.
Also, the aft deck of this boat has a sumbrella cover that goes from the
stern to the rear of the fly bridge. Since the boat only sleeps two in the
cabin, I am curious whether the AC would cool that aft area to some degree
if I leave the cabin door open with the rear cover on so that I could put a
air mattress in the back for two more sleepers. I live in NC and the evening
can be rather warm. I am just curious if anyone has tried this with any
success.

- When I started fishing in the early years
I had no money.
I went to pawn shops and negotiated on
their asking price for fishing equipment.
They often have good quality reels and
rods that have not been maintained very well.
When I got the goods home I would take
the reels apart, install new drag washers
and grease the gears.
You can put new guides on the rods,
if necessary, easily.
I still use some of this equipment today
some of it is over 15 years old and works
like a champ.

- I actually bid on some old reels on eBay
last night so I may be learning the art of reel repair very soon.
Unfortunately, I am not exactly sure what I need. I have fished in fresh
water my whole life, but I am really starting from scratch with deep sea
fishing. One of the reasons I am buyung the boat is for the challenge of
learning a new kind of fishing.
I am in the process of making an offer on a 1987 27.5 ft Sea Ray Sport fish
(w/ flybridge)with dual stations. It has twin 350s - totally rebuilt in 99,
Gen, AC and seems like it will do nicely as a weekend stay abord fishing
boat. Unfortunately, it only sleeps two which is a drawback. As I am on a
limited budget, any advise on how much a boat like this will cost me in
maintenance will help out. I am figuring on 175 per month dockage, 100
dollars misc repairs per month. Is that reasonable? Are there things I
should take into account that I have not thought about? Do you think it
will possible for me to clean the bottom on this boat or would you recommend
getting a monthly service?
