Question:
Other than taking the seats to a upholstery shop and having them
repair your boat seats (ie: the cracks and or rips in them)
have any of you found a great product or tape that will fix or repair
cracked or ripped bass boat seats? I would like to do a temp fix on
them until the budget warrents a reupholstery job
Answer:
-My ex partner put black gaffers tape (similar to duct tape -- used for
everything in the TV, Film and Photog industries) on his black seats where
the seams split. Bad move. IT rolls up when you're sliding around on the
seat in rough water, and gets the adhesive all over your pants & jacket.
-The ones that I have re-done all have had a plywood base. I just bought some
plastic/vinyl material over sized, and stapled it right over the present
seats. Once I had to replace the plywood base, too.
-The best thing is to get marine vinyl from a fabric store and recover the
cushions. I have done this to my last boat - replaced all the vinyl in the
whole boat - 14 foot open bow. If you want the repair to last use stainless
steel staples and tuck the corners well.
Get a book on reupholstering from the library and read a bit about it first.
It is not hard to do. The corners can get a little tricky.
-I recently did some checking and its cheapest just to replace them.
-Walmart has a vinyl repair kit for about $5.00. I used it to repair a small cut
in one of my seats. The only probllem was that I didn't take time to match the
color properly and you can see a light spot where the repair is. I didn't have
enough light in the garage when I made the repair.
