Answer:
-On a boat of this vintage, your best bet is to trace down the wires and do some testing with the voltmeter. This old and things may very well have been changed from the way they were from the factory. In most cases, the batteries will be charged by the shore power regardless of the switch position, but I couldn't tell you that a a definite unless I was looking at the system. http://hometown.aol.com/hlaviation/

-I suspect that electrical and plumbing systems on a boat of that vintage will bear very little relationship to that described in the original owner's manual.

As HLAviation says, you will have to trace wiring, locate manuals for the various pieces of equipment (were inverters common (or even available) on boats in 1977?), and generally create your own manual for the boat as it is at present.

Some inverters do also act as battery chargers, but many do not - you would have to consult the inverter manual. The inverter, even it is was original equipment, would not have been a Carver product - they would buy it from Heart Interface (or other maker), and should have provided the maker's manual.

You might want to contact the previous owner to see if he has any equipment manuals, and/or if he can familiarize you with the boat as it is now.
