Bass fishing Boat question

Question:
I'm ignorant beyond your wild imagination when it comes to fishing. I've really never been fishing a great deal. When I was a kid, my parents were divorced, etc and my mother wasn't much into fishing .

Well... last year I got the fishing bug. My youngest son is 7 years old and had been pestering me to take him. We went out, bought some "crank" baits and a couple poles. I bought him a smaller pole, some bobbers and some minnows.

I've never seen a child's face light up so much as when he caught a 3.5lb small mouth bass!!! Oh my goodness!! It was awesome to see!!!

That was last year. This year... I went out with a friend who has a Nitro Bass Boat. And guess what... I fell in love with bass boats too!!

So, yesterday I bought a brand new 2001 Bass Cat 18' Sabre. I've never had a bass boat before... several pleasure boats but never a bass boat.

My question... now that I've got a boat, etc. What advice would you give someone who knows very little about fishing in general and even less about fishing with a boat!

I don't need any "boat operation" type advice. I'm very capable of driving, handling the boat, etc. It's just fishing from them, with them, that I'm ignorant of.

And like I said... I'm really ignorant of fishing in general too. Heck, I don't even know where, when, why to use a specific type of lure or bait.

Answer:
-Practice on casting. each different type of lure have different skills to cast and operate. If your kid can swim, take them as well, you will be amaze by how fast they learn those skills!

-There are many books on the subject. However, my advice would be to monitor this website and another; rec.outdoors.fishing.bass There are avid bass fishermen (and women) on the website. Many are tournament fishermen but knowing the group of people they are, I am willing to bet that nearly ALL of them will try to help you learn the basics. They get as much pleasure reading a story of a child catching his first fish as you do telling it. Give them a try you won't be disappointed.

-you should learn to work the trolling motor. take it slow. the fish are usually on the banks, throw spinners and jigs against banks and fish slow in the initial first few feet. be quiet. watch out for rocks. remember, you have to get pretty close to the banks for most fish. learn to troll.start buying a large variety of lures, you'll need them. always match the color of lure with water.use bluegills if available, remember they will catch big fish. oh, when baiting a hook with a minnow, the way i do it is by putting hook through the back of left eye an throught back of right eye. they will stay alive just fine if you do it right. this will ensure a good hook set. well, good luck and i hope you are patient. that is what fishing is all about.
