Question:
I own a 1999 40hp oil-injected Mercury on a bass boat and have a problem
that I hope someone can help me with. Late last year my wife accidently
damaged the engine decal on the driver's side of the cowling. No big deal
except it doesn't look "new" anymore. I decided that this winter I'd see
about removing the old decal and replace it. I contacted the dealership
where I bought the boat as well as a couple of other places in
Indianapolis and found that the only way to replace it is to order a decal
kit from Mercury at a cost of $113.52.
This cost has me rather flabbergasted. I only need the "swoosh" part of
the decal and only the right side one, at that.
Anyway, anyone have an idea where I could get just the section I need for less?
Answer:
- I damaged the decal on my Merc and I was in the process of going
to replace it, but my buddy who manages a fishing lodge up in the Queen
Charlotes and gets a lot of damage to his outboards told me the cost
(whew), so I am looking into using the plastic sheet that the
modelmakers use to make my own decals. Perhaps there are modelmakers
that visit here who could advise if that would be a sane approach.I am
planning to ask at a local hobby shop.
-I'd need to see what you're talking about, but I cut vinyl boat lettering
and graphics and I'm pretty sure that what you have damaged is just a vinyl
product. Get me a pix or tracing and I can probably recreate it for you.
-Look at any merc, or probably all manufacturers at the decal, on the
motor cowling, is made of plastic,or as you say vinyl type decal that
is easily damaged the merc replacment costs are expensive so there may
be a market for you if you can replicate them, they may be upset though
copyright thing may be infringed.
How about you designing some personized decals like on some of the
motor cycles, and cars or whatever, may be a market in that.
