Question:
Aluminum Hull motor requirements and manufacturer ?
Anybody out there ever hear of a hull I believe was made in Gimli Manitoba.
Its an alumnium 20' river boat style hull... has the letter GBW on the
transom right hand side at the top.
I'm trying to find out two things.
1) Who manufactured the aluminum boat... do they have a web site.
2) Find out what the proper motor size is required to run this hull.
Answer:
-GBW stood for Gimli Boat Works. The original company founded by a Mr.
Johnson was eventually taken over by his son Gerald Johnson who still lives
in Gimli. Unfortunately the business folded and I believe the new company is
lake Winnipeg Marine. They do not manufacture aluminum boats. If you have
the type of boat this company made then it should be a very heavy duty
aluminum. They were used on Lake Winnipeg by commerical fisherman and for
cargo hauling. There are still lots of them around the Lakes in our region.
I have seen them in your size with everything from 200 h.p outboards to
diesel sterndrives.
Three other companies also manufactured clones of these boats. Riverton Boat
Works, Riverton Manitoba, also no longer in business and a place called Zag
Fab located in Selkirk, Mantioba. They are mostly into trailer and
houseboat manufacturing now. They are still operating and can be reached at
1-204-378-5314 although I'm not sure they will be of much assistance.
Probably the most popular heavy welded aluminum boat manufacturer in this
area right now is a place called Hi-Tech Fabricators also located in Selkirk
1-204-482-6169. They have been in business about 20 years and still make the
boats. I have no idea if they could help you however they all made a similar
looking boat.
